Our second day of the Tommy Douglas Library Summer Camp was all about banking and smart spending! We kicked off with an overview of the most basic types of bank accounts - chequing accounts and savings accounts. We discussed how chequing accounts are "everyday use" accounts where money for daily purchases is drawn from, while savings accounts are "future" accounts meant to store money and earn compound interest. After looking at simple and compound interest, we then shifted gears to debit and credit cards - we talked about the risks associated with late credit card payments and high interest rates, as well as how smart spenders who repay their credit card expenses on time get to enjoy the points and other perks these cards often offer. We learned about the importance of credit score, and talked about credit card traps like compounding interest on late payments and the minimum payment trap! Next, we discussed frictionless spending - psychologists have proven that paying with cash causes emotional pain as you see the stack of money physically shrinking, while paying with cards or Apple Pay feels easier when you can't actually see the money going away in front of you. Tech companies also intentionally remove things that might make consumers hesitate before buying, such as long wait times or pulling out a wallet! After discussing and coming up with specific frictionless spending tactics used by companies, we turned our attention to video game currency tricks and subscription traps. We looked at how game companies place a layer of fake tokens between real-world money and digital game items in order to strip away the mental guilt of spending - this is because your brain now considers the tokens as a toy rather than real money, making purchasing the tokens and then the digital items easier. We also covered how companies offering a free subscription trial while asking for your card information is a long-term money-eating trap, as you automatically get charged as soon as the free trial ends and every month after until you manually cancel your subscription - which the majority of people often forget to do! To round off our camp session, we conducted a "financial forensics" activity where students had to identify the financial traps, fix the finances and block the mindless spending of a university student living in Vancouver. Today's camp session was awesome and covered several vital personal finance topics essential for monetary success - see you for our final session tomorrow!
