For our third and final session of the Tommy Douglas Library Summer Camp, we took a deep dive into investing. We had an overview of stocks and the stock market, and different types of investments such as ETFs, Mutual Funds and Dividends. After, we learned about risk vs. reward in an investing context, including the correlation between the two on a graph, and portfolio diversification. After learning about company, industry and asset class diversification, and a "Fix the Portfolio!" activity, we looked into the concept of inflation! We learned how inflation makes your money lose buying power over time, despite the fact that the amount itself may be the same, and how different tools lose against, tie the race with or beat inflation (while comparing specific growth percentages). More specifically, piggy banks and traditional savings accounts are likely to lose against inflation, high-yield savings accounts often tie the race (but still don't build new wealth) and investing wins against inflation by actually building real wealth! Finally, we ended with an investment portfolio activity, where students worked in teams to invest $10,000 across different types of investments while justifying and explaining their choices. Thank you to everyone who attended our 2026 Tommy Douglas Library Summer Camp - it was fun, full of valuable knowledge and a great experience to learn about wealth building and connect with peers! We hope all of our students benefitted from their camp experience, and wish them the best with their future financial success.
